Most DCX2496 users encounter right from the start a major problem when using it through it's digital input and they are left with those options :

play their CDs at full throttle all the time. This option may become pretty soon an issue with their wife and / or neighbours and / or local police station (tick appropriate choice)
use passive attenuators. The problem with these is fine matching each channel to the others for any potentiometer position (a trained listener is able to detect a 10th of dB difference)
use a high end 6 channels volume control like the one Selectronic has designed specially for the DCX2496
